Burchfield, Adams Named SAAC Student-Athlete of the Month

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has named Track and Field’s Shelbie Burchfield and Cycling’s Blake Adams as the Student-Athletes of the Month for April.

Shelbie Burchfield (Morristown, Tenn.) has impacted the King women’s track and field team greatly in just her first season with the Lady Tornado. Over the last month, she finished seventh overall at the Liberty Open (April 7) in the women’s high jump but then turned in a career performance at the Conference Carolinas Championships (April 20-21). At the Championships, Burchfield hit the National qualifying height in the women’s high jump, eclipsing 1.68 meters, for the second time this season. Her jump in the event also broke a Conference Carolinas Championship record. Burchfield also exceled on the track, finishing third in the 400m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 1:08.40.

Freshman Blake Adams has put up spectacular numbers all season and added two more race wins to his resume in the month of April. At the Clemson Open, Adams finished first overall in the men’s ‘C’ criterium and then followed that performance with his fourth crit win, seventh overall of the season, at the SECCC Championships. The Pigeon Forge, Tenn. native was a key part of the team’s second place finish at the Championships and also took top honors in the men’s ‘C’ points standings for the season.
