King Leads Conference with 190 Named to Presidential Honor Roll

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Conference Carolinas has released the 2012 Spring Presidential Honor Roll list. King College was the best represented member school with a league-high 190 student-athletes named to the prestigious list.

Conference Carolinas is proud to announce that 1,516 student-athletes have been named to the 2012 Spring Presidential Honor Roll. Each institution within the conference has emphasized their commitment to academic importance as they have continued to have student-athletes achieve a grade point average of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) at each of their institutions to achieve this honor.

The Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll is awarded twice a year covering each of the fall and spring academic semesters and is based on meeting the criteria at the end of the previous semester. For the 2012 spring semester, King College led all league members with 190 qualifying student-athletes. Schools that followed included, Lees-McRae College with 162, Queens University of Charlotte with 154, and Pfeiffer University with 147 student-athletes.

Of the 24 King athletic teams, Tornado Baseball led all programs with 19 recipients of the honor followed closely by Women’s Track & Field (14) and three programs with 13 honorees (Men’s Track & Field, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer).

Over the course of the 2011-12 academic year, five King student-athletes have been named Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sport. Cross Country runner Danielle Alfano was dawned the honor after the fall season while Eddie Piccinini of the men’s basketball team earned the award following the winter season. On May 16 three more Tornado student-athletes were named Spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sports when Hannah Witt (Women’s Track & Field), Jose Avila (Men’s Tennis), and Josh Bamberger (Men’s Golf) each earned the honor.

"To lead Conference Carolinas in this is an accomplishment that represents our core mission at King - to educate our students," said Athletic Director David Hicks. "This recognition comes as a result of the leadership of our coaches, the support of our faculty, and most importantly, the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes."

Conference Carolinas continues to emphasize “Academics and Athletics Working Together” as each school strives to grow their Presidential Honor Roll each and every year.  The new Presidential Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who have earned a 3.20 grade-point average (up from 3.00 in previous years) on a 4.00 scale for the semester and includes freshman and transfer student athletes (that have participated in either a conference or non-conference sponsored sport).

Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletic conference currently made up of 12 teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker College, Converse College, Erskine College, King College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, North Greenville University, Pfeiffer University, and Queens University of Charlotte.
