Tornado hold commanding lead in Blue Ridge Cup

BRISTOL, Tenn. – With all of the athletic competitions complete, King University holds an 19-4 lead over Lees-McRae College in the inaugural Blue Ridge Cup. The Tornado took eight of the final nine points this spring to extend their advantage over the Bobcats.

The King men’s tennis team took a 9-0 win over the Bobcats to kick off the spring season. The softball team follow suit, sweeping a doubleheader, 4-1 and 9-1 from Lees-McRae. The Tornado took the final four points in men’s and women’s cycling and men’s and women’s track and field by finishing higher than Lees-McRae in each conference championship.

King also placed a higher percentage of student-athletes on the academic all-conference teams. The Tornado had 51 of their 122 (41.8 percent) juniors and seniors represented while Lees-McRae had 34 of their 92 (37.0 percent) juniors and seniors named to academic all-conference teams. The final two points will be the school’s graduation rate and the overall student-athlete GPA.

The Tornado and Bobcats share 17 varsity athletic teams which will be used to help determine an annual winner. Participating teams for both schools include men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s cycling, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field, men’s and women’s volleyball, and softball. Three academic components will also be used to award a total of three points toward the standings including NCAA graduation rate, the percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic All-Conference Team, and each school’s overall student-athlete grade point average.
