Following a system known all too well during her playing days, Shelly Yount joined her former head coach at King University as the women’s basketball assistant coach in August 2011. She enters her third season with the Tornado as the top assistant under Head Coach Josh Thompson.

In 2012-13, Yount helped lead the Tornado to a 14-13 record, and qualify for their first Conference Carolinas Tournament with a 10-12 league mark. Defensively, King ranked in the leagues top-5 in four categories, blocks per game (3rd), points allowed per game (4th) opponent's field goal percentage (3rd) and opponent's three-point field goal percentage (5th). King also won the Conference Carolinas Team Sportsmanship award, and five student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference Carolinas honors.

With the help of her defensive knowledge, Yount helped the Lady Tornado defense improve dramatically in the last two months of the 2011-12 season. In the team’s last 12 games, King limited its opponents to 60 points or fewer in seven of their last 12 games. She also saw six members of the team named to the Conference Carolinas All-Academic Team, contributing to King’s conference-leading 190 honorees, and saw the team achieve the third-highest team grade point average among all NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, and NJCCA institutions.

Yount came to King College after spending a year as a graduate assistant coach for Nyack College (Nyack, NY) in 2010-11.  Prior to coaching at Nyack she was a center for the Warriors from 2005-10 that showed great skill in the post as a defender and shooter.  She was a four-year starter at the center position and a three-year captain under Thompson.

Yount finished her career with 1,103 points ranking her eighth in Nyack women’s basketball history. She accumulated over 816 rebounds and 195 blocks during her career. She led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) in blocked shots during her sophomore and seniors seasons and finished second in the conference during her junior year.  In her junior season she helped the Lady Warriors win the NCCAA East Region Championship, which earned them a birth in the NCCAA national tournament.

During her senior year she led Nyack to a CACC regular season and conference tournament championship and was named to the all-tournament team for performance. Yount also helped the Warriors to their first ever birth to the NCAA national tournament after the school transitioned to NCAA Division II.

Yount was a two-time team Defensive Player of the Year (2007, 2008) complementing her offensive impact. In addition she earned the Iron Woman Award and Comeback Player of the Year following the 2007 season. Under Thompson, Yount served as team captain for three seasons from 2007-09.

The Belvidere, N.J., native also took to courts outside of Nyack when she played in Colombia, South America for Athletes in Action during the summer of 2008.

Yount graduated from Nyack with a bachelor’s degree in pastoral ministry with a concentration in counseling in 2009 and returned for a Master of Arts in intercultural studies, which she finished in 2011.
