King leads CC with 10 academic all-conference selections

BRISTOL, Tenn. – As we near the end of the regular season, Conference Carolinas has started to hand out awards. On Tuesday, the league announced their academic all-conference baseball team and King University led the league with 10 selections.

Headlining the list of Tornado honorees is pitcher Cory Rhodes, who carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in the mathematics program. Rhodes leads the team with 72 and two-thirds innings pitched in 14 appearances this season. He's given up 75 hits, walking 22 batters with a conference-high 77 strikeouts. His season ERA stands at 4.46.

Another key contributor to make the list of all-conference honorees is catcher J.D. Wallace, who has a 3.95 GPA and is a business major. Wallace has a .341 batting average with 12 doubles and 21 runs batted in.

Two players filling multiple roles were also selected to the team. Tyler Raymond has nine appearances as a pitcher and 41 starts in the lineup, primarily as the team's right fielder. He has the fourth-highest batting average on the team at .364, has 16 extra-base hits, and has been credited with 24 runs batted in. He also has a 4.73 earned run average and a 1-0 record in 32 and one-thirds innings pitched. His 3.333 GPA earns him all-conference recognition. Landon Weitekamp, who carries a 3.431 GPA, has split time between the mound and the infield this season, with a 1-0 record in seven pitching appearances. He also has pounded out 10 hits and driven in eight runs at the plate.

Justin Trent has appeared in 39 games this season and carries a .295 batting average and 10 extra-base hits, including three home runs. His GPA currently stands at 3.414. Ryan Nichols has made 12 appearances and pitched 14 and one-thirds innings and was honored for his 3.538 GPA. Reiss Stanley, who has been a key contributor to the pitching staff with 54 innings pitched over 11 appearances, sports a 3.64 GPA to merit his all-conference nod.

Other honorees include Mark Hode, Tim Grapes, and Jacob Bohanan.

The 2014 Conference Carolinas Baseball Academic All-Conference representatives have been awarded to junior and senior student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale in all work completed at their member institution that have played in a conference sponsored sport. The GPA is calculated based on the student-athletes cumulative average through the previous semester and each student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one academic year.
