Tornado stopped at Voorhees

DENMARK, S.C. - The King College men's basketball team was upended Wednesday at Voorhees (S.C.) College by a 70-67 score.

King went to 7-10 on the season. Voorhees has a 6-8 record after the game as all six wins have been home contests.

Jason Seymore (Powell, Tenn.) led all scorers with 19 points and he pulled down seven rebounds.

Clarence Smith (Nashville, Tenn.) added 13 points and five rebounds and Brian Hewitt (Lexington, Ky.) finished with the same 13 points.

Antwan Carter and Garland McArthur both scored 18 points apiece for Voorhees.

The Tornado had to try to overcome a 37-31 deficit after the first half.

Voorhees made three more baskets than King. The Tornado finished the game 22-for-52 (42.3 percent) while the home team went 25-for-45 (55.6 percent). Voorhees became the fifth team to finish a game with a field goal percentage of at least 50 and King has a 1-4 record when foes shot above 50 percent.

King did have one more long-range three pointer, 8-7. At the free throw line King finished 15-for-20 (75.0 percent) with Voorhees at 13-for-19 (68.4 percent).

Both teams committed 22 turnovers, which was the second most by King this season and the sixth time the Tornado defense forced 20 or more.

The rebound edge went to King by three, 27-24. It was the sixth time in the season King had fewer than 30 rebounds in a game, but the eighth time King outrebounded the opponent.

King returns to action Saturday at Augusta State (Ga.) University with a 4 p.m. contest. Augusta State has the No. 5 ranking in the last NABC Coaches' Poll. Five other teams from King's schedule appeared in the newest Top-25 poll, No. 2 Bellarmine (Ky.), No. 6 Southern Indiana, No. 11 Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.), No. 18 Kentucky Wesleyan and No. 25 Alaska Anchorage.
