King places 10 on basketball academic all-conference team

BRISTOL, Tenn. – As we near the end of basketball season awards start to be handed out, and Conference Carolinas released their academic all-conference teams on Thursday. The King University men's basketball team placed three student-athletes on the team while the women had seven representatives.

On the men's side, Nathanael Hughes, Logan Lyle and Brandon Crompton all earned the distinction. A senior, Crompton has a 3.67 grade-point average and is Biological and Biomedical Science while Lyle and Hughes posted GPA's of 3.51 and 3.27, respectively. Lyle has been one of King's most effective three-point shooters this season as he makes 38.6 percent of his attempts from long range. Crompton has appeared in 25 games, making five starts for the Tornado while Hughes has appeared in 18 games off the bench.

On the women's side, Kelly Jackson, and Chelsea Bowling lead the group of seven. The duo have been in the starting lineup nearly all season and rank among the team's leaders in scoring. Jackson averages 7.1 points and dishes out 1.1 assists per game while Bowling scores 8.0 points and hands out 1.5 assists per game. Jackson has a cumulative GPA of 3.85 while Bowling has a GPA of 3.81.

Sara Mitchell has seen her playing time increase late in the season, and posted a career-high 13 points against North Greenville University earlier this month. She earned a spot on the academic all-conference team with her impressive GPA of 3.84.

The final four Tornado make the squad are Stephanie Brantley (3.30 GPA), Alley Sprouse (3.40 GPA), Bonnie Durrett (3.61 GPA) and Tia Keitt (3.68 GPA). Brantley has appeared in all 26 games, making 24 starts and averages 6.5 points per game while Sprouse ranks third in the league with 46 total blocks. Durrett ranks second in the league with an average of 9.9 rebounds per game to go along with a team-high 11.0 points per game. Keitt has started all but one game and leads the team with a 2.3 assists per game average.

The 2013-2014 Conference Carolinas Basketball Academic All-Conference representatives have been awarded to the following junior, senior, and 5-year student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale in all work completed at their member institution that have played in a conference sponsored sport. The GPA is calculated based on the student-athletes cumulative average through the previous semester and each student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one academic year.

Each year the academic all-conference team is released while closing out each regular season before starting the tournament championships. The men and women will begin tournament play Saturday, March 1st with quarterfinal games being played at the higher seeded team. The top four men's and women's teams will then travel to the Cabarrus County Arena and Events Center on March 5th and 6th for the Conference Carolinas Basketball Championship Tournament powered by OrthoCarolina.
