TAZEWELL, Tenn. - King College and Josh Bamberger played into the first-round lead of the Lincoln Memorial Fall Invitational Monday with a team score of 288 as Bamberger posted a 67 at the Woodlake Golf Club.
Bamberger (Waterloo, Canada) went out with a 33 on the front nine followed by a 34 on the final nine. For the round he had five birdies and one eagle on the first hole en route to the 67. He has a one-shot advantage over Nick York, from Tusculum (Tenn.) College. Bamberger's round was the first time he had gone under par this season is his first sub-par round since a one-under 71 at the Eagle Invitational on March 14, 2010. He had played nine competitive rounds between the below-par scores.
The Tornado's 288 has the team out front by a shot over host Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University. Tusculum has third with a 290 and the Lincoln Memorial Blue ranked fourth at 291. North Greenville (S.C.) University and Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College share fifth after team scores of 295 Monday.
Nick Carden (Hixson, Tenn.) posted a 32 on the front nine with a 37 on the back side for the three-under-par 69. Five birdies overall were cracked into by a pair of bogies on the final nine holes. Carden was tied for third after the first 18 holes.
Matt Love (Johnson City, Tenn.) added a 75 to the team score with a 77 by Travis Snyder (Fayetteville, Ga.).
Richard Powell (Hixson, Tenn.) went out with a 35 before a 37 on the back nine for an even-par 72. He joined a group of six golfers tied for 12th as he played as individual. Tommy Ricker (Parrottsville, Tenn.) went out with a 77 in the opening round while Tyler Welch (White House, Tenn.) carded a 79 playing as individuals.
The golfers played the course as a Par-72 at 6,771 yards. Final round action tees off Tuesday morning.
