HIGH POINT, N.C. – Conference Carolinas released the 2013 Men's Golf preseason rankings. King University was tabbed to finish fourth in the conference after a strong fall season. Barton College was named the preseason favorite.
Senior Richard Powell (Hixson, Tenn.) led the Tornado with a 70.63 round average through four tournaments this fall. In three of the four tournaments King participated in, he finished inside the top-5 with a low round of 69 (-3) at the second round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational (Oct. 1-2).
Taylor Gouge (Elizabethton, Tenn.) rests and the only King golfer to earn an event win when he won the title at his own home open. The sophomore won the King College Invitational by two strokes (68-69-137) when he finished three-under-par at the Bristol Country Club (Oct. 8-9).
In three of four tournaments, the Tornado finished in the top half of the field of competing teams while consistently improving over the course of the fall season. The Tornado won the Lincoln Memorial Fall Invitational at Wasioto Winds Country Club by two strokes over host LMU in the season finale in mid-October. They tied for second at the King College Invitiational and were just two strokes off the pace of tournament winner Barton College.
Barton returns as the preseason favorite, taking the top spot in the poll. The Bulldogs, ranked 25th in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll, earned a trip to its 13th straight NCAA Championship last season and return two-time All-American Daniel Claytor who captured two individual titles.
Taking the No. 2 spot in the poll is Belmont Abbey College who after a strong fall season cracked into the top-10 in the final GolfStat rankings. Coker rounded out the top-3 with King following in fourth. The complete poll is listed below.
