Tornado overtaken at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. - King College was handed a 3-1 setback at Belmont Abbey (N.C.) College Saturday.

Belmont Abbey got the lead with a 17th minute goal by Ross Smith. He used a breakaway into left corner after a pass from Ross Smith. Gianluca D'Agata tacked on the second score at the 57:36 mark. The assists were credited to Timmi Borges DaSilva and Matt Dolan.

King cut the deficit in half when Tom Winspear (Yarm, England) headed a pass from John Simmons (Essex, England) into the net on a corner kick. For Winspear, that was his team-high 11th goal of the season. The Tornado score was added to the scoreboard in the 68th minute.

The home team got an unassisted goal from Matt Dolan with 53 seconds left in play.

Richard Masters (Kent, England) had five saves in eight attempts. His counterpart Louis Liberatore totaled two saves. Overall King had seven shots with 14 for Belmont Abbey.

After the match King went to 3-11-1 while Belmont Abbey has an 8-5-2 overall record. The two-goal margin was just the second time this season King had not been defeated by a lone goal. The Lees-McRae (N.C.) College contest went against King with a similar 3-1 score on Sept. 29.

King welcomes Union (Ky.) College to Bristol for the home finale Wednesday to play at 4 p.m. The Tornado have won the last seven meetings since the start of the 2004 season, however the last two were matching 2-1 scores.
