King Fall in 5-1 Decision to Queens

Pete Griffith scored his first goal of the season following a four-goal first half by the Royals. King lost to Queens (N.C.) by a 5-1 count.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – King Men's Soccer fell to 0-12 overall after a 5-1 loss to Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday evening. Pete Griffith scored his first goal of the season but four Royals goals in the first half sent the Tornado to 0-7 in Conference Carolinas play.

Both teams pressured offensively early and after swapping offside calls, the Royals struck first with Kevin Anderson's first goal of the year. Stemming from a free kick taken outside of the 18-yard box, Diego Suarez delivered a shot that was initially saved by King keeper Joshua Feener. The ball bounced off of Feener and landed on Anderson's foot before he delivered it to the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. The goal was scored at 17:46.

In the 27th minute of the first half, Queens added to their lead when Gersi Cilingiri added a goal shortly after a pair of substitutions by the hosts.

The Royals continued the pressure, delivering one shot that sailed high and another that was blocked out in front of the net by the Tornado. At 32:45 Julian Mitchell delivered a pass to Drew Walsh who put the Royals up 3-0.

Queens added one more goal before the end of the half off of a Ryan King corner kick that Ian Murray finished off to give the Royals a 4-0 advantage into halftime.

The Tornado offense put together six shots in the contest, one landing in the back of the net from senior Pete Griffith (Ballyclare, N. Ireland.). The defenseman benefitted from a corner kick taken by freshman Devante Walker (Brampton, Ontario) where Griffith delivered King's first goal at 82:11 to bring the score to 4-1.

Matthew Cavallo of Queens added one more goal to maintain their four-goal lead, doing so with 16 seconds remaining on the clock.

Josh Feener (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) made his fifth start between posts and made three saves but faced 18 shot attempts from the Royals. Cheo Armstrong (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the team with two shots, one landing on goal.

King (0-12, 0-7) will play the Pfeiffer University Falcons in Misenheimer, N.C. on Oct. 13 with kickoff taking place at 3:00 p.m. Following their meeting with the Falcons, the Tornado will return to Parks Field to host the Erskine Flying Fleet on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m.
