BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Thursday marked day one of the sixth annual Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships. Two relay teams and four individual members of the King Tornado swimming & diving teams competed in the first of the three-day tournament. Both teams reside in the middle of the pack of a total of 22 teams competing on both the men's and women's sides.
Senior Melissa Smith (Maryville, Tenn.) possessed the highest first-day placement, finishing second in the women's 1-meter dive with 156.70 points.
The foursome of Samantha Norman, Shirley Langford, Rachel Fuller, and Kelsey Wiese finished sixth overall in the women's 400-yard medley relay. Their time of 4:16.19 held off Milligan's 'A' team and was just seconds off the pace from a top-5 finish. Wiese turned in the third-fastest 100 yards in the race (54.85).
Rachel Fuller (North Augusta, S.C.) finished 15th in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle (19:32.27). Quenton Lyons (Louisville, Ky.) and Christopher Nochowicz (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) finished the men's 1,650 free in 11th and 13th place, respectively.
The final relay team to compete on Friday was the men's 400-meter medley relay team comprised of Reynold Thibideau, Lyons, Christian Knoblauch, and Taylor Horton. The team finished ninth overall with a 3:51.95 finish time.
Following day one's completion, the women's team rests in sixth place out of 10 with 45 points. Mars Hill College and Asbury University share a lead for fourth with 51 points. Notre Dame College currently leads the women's side with 96 points.
On the men's side, King (28) sits in ninth place just one event into the competition. They are just four points out of sixth place Urbana University (32). Notre Dame College also leads the men's side with 92 points.
Day two on Friday will begin with preliminary races opening at 9:30 a.m. inside the Stivers Aquatic and Wellness Center at host Union College. The following finals events will be held, in order: 200 free relay, 200 IM, 500 free, 100 breast, 200 back, 100 free, 200 butterfly, and 800 free relay.
