Wiese Makes Tornado History at Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships
Kelsey Wiese won the 100-yard backstroke to become the first women's conference champion in swimming for King University.
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Junior Kelsey Weise (Gallatin, Tenn.) became the first women's conference champion in swimming with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.33 seconds at the Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships on Saturday. Wiese also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle on Friday with a time of 54.19 seconds in the final, just 0.12 seconds behind the winner. Wiese added another second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle on Saturday with a time of 24.65 seconds.
The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Wiese, senior Michelle Donihe (Chattanooga, Tenn.), freshman Rachel Fuller (North Augusta, S.C.), and senior Kelsey Copeland (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) finished seventh with a time of 1:44.37. Fuller finished sixth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:21.80 in the final.
In the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, freshman Christian Knobloch (Auburn, Wash.), sophomore Jacob Morales (Wailuku, Hawaii), junior Alek Nochowicz (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), and junior Taylor Horton (Conyers, Ga.) placed eighth with a clip of 1:31.25.
Freshman Sami Norman (Roanoke, Va.) finished eighth in the women's 200-yard IM with a time of 2:19.36 in the final. Norman also had an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.01) and a ninth-place finish in the 400-yard IM (4:55.77). Freshman Reynold Thibideau (Titusville, Fla.) placed 10th in the men's 200-yard IM (2:04.81) and 11th in the 100-yard backstroke (56.41 seconds).
In the women's 400-yard freestyle relay, Norman, Fuller, Copeland, and Wiese placed seventh with a time of 3:48.96. On the men's side in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Knobloch, freshman Quenton Lyons (Louisville, Ky.), Horton, and Nochowicz finished eighth with a clip of 3:23.46.
In the women's 500-yard freestyle, Fuller placed 14th (5:33.56) and teammate Jade Schroeder (Titusville, Fla.) finished 15th (5:33.96).
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Norman, Donihe, senior Malorie McBride (Nashville, Tenn.), and Schroeder placed eighth with a time of 8:33.05. On the men's side in the same event, Knobloch, Morales, Nochowicz, and Lyons also finished eighth with a clip of 7:34.91.
Thibideau, Lyons, Horton, and Morales finished eighth in the men's 200-yard medley relay with a 1:45.73 clip. The foursome of Norman, sophomore Sarah Hennies (Scholfield Barracks, Hawaii), Fuller, and Wiese finished 10th in the women's 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:58.02.
As a team, the Lady Tornado finished sixth of 14 teams with 244 points. The men placed ninth of 12 teams with 136 points. Notre Dame College won the women's team title, and Wheeling Jesuit University took the men's title.
The ASC Championships was the final event for Tornado Swimming & Diving for the season.
