Men’s Tennis Back on Track, Women Fall to Pfeiffer

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Tornado Tennis hosted the Pfeiffer Falcons men's and women's teams on Friday morning at the King College Tennis Complex. The Tornado men swept the Falcons over nine flights in their 12th win of the season while the women fell, 8-1.

The Tornado men's team defeated the Falcons in all nine flights played though their resiliency was tested with four different matches featured at least one set where extra points were needed to determine a winner. King turned in three wins in doubles competition, winning each flight by at least three points. They continued their success in singles play, led by Jose Avilla (Cuernavaca, Mexico) who defeated Ben Hunter by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Pablo Vidal followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sebastian Wernecke before the final four matches had at least one set need extra points to determine a winner.

Vitor Villar (Amparo, Brazil) and Patrick Jones (Bluff City, Tenn.) each took their first sets over their respective opponents with ease, but dropped their middles sets to force a third frame. Villar and Luis Villalta battled to a 10-8 decision, giving the freshman Villar the victory while Jones defeated Orlando Castillo, 11-9, in the fourth singles flight match. With the match in hand, Leo Brigato and Seth Hale each earned wins to complete the sweep 7-5, 6-4 and 7-5, 6-3, respectively.

The Lady Tornado fell by an 8-1 count to the Falcons' women's team. Eden Sherrod (Kingston, Tenn.) earned King's only flight win in singles play, defeating Briana Oliver in come-from-behind fashion. Sherrod fell in the first set, 1-6, but came back and took sets two and three by counts of 6-4 and 10-8 in her victory. She now improves to 5-8 in singles play this season. Sarah Anderson (Bristol, Tenn.) challenged Taylor Lindsay in singles play, but inevitably fell 6-4, 7-5.

The ladies fall to 2-14 overall on the year and still seek their first conference win of the season. The men improve to 12-3 overall, 6-2 in league play. They have now won two straight matches with four remaining before the Conference Carolinas Championships (April 20-22). Both teams will play at Shaw University (Raleigh, N.C.) on April 13 in non-conference play.
