Jones Highlights at ITA Southeast Regionals in Men’s Singles
BRISTOL, Tenn. – At this weekend's USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Tournament held in Sumter, S.C., the King Tornado were well represented on both the singles and doubles front. Senior Patrick Jones stood atop the bracket of the Men's C Singles division, sweeping through en route to a tournament victory. The combination of Rodrigo Avila and Pablo Vidal competed for the Men's B Doubles tournament championship, advancing to the finals.
Jones, a senior from (Bluff City, Tenn.), defeated a pair of Conference Carolinas singles players en route to being named the tournament champion in the Men's Singles C division. In his opening round he defeated Gabriel Trombini of Belmont Abbey College (6-4, 6-3). After suffering a loss to Limestone's Benjamin Lascari (6-2, 6-4), he redeemed himself with a strong showing (6-3, 1-6, 10-6) against Michael Van Dusen prior to his withdrawal, giving Jones the victory. He advanced to the Men's C Singles consolation championship round where he defeated Alex Poda of Limestone in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The combination of Rodrigo Avila (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and Pablo Vidal (Madrid, Spain) won three consecutive matches to advance to the championship round of the Men's B Doubles division. The duo breezed through their first two matches against Benjamin Lascari /Lucas Guinski (8-2) and Orlando Castillo/Stephen Miller (8-0) before defeating Akio Mariano/Gabriel Trombini of Belmont Abbey, 8-5. In the finals round, Avila and Vidal dropped an 8-4 decision to Kenneth Cozart and Taylor Powell (GC).
Sophomore Rafael Francisco (Santos, Brazil) won his first singles match with the team, defeating Alex Poda (Limestone) 6-2, 7-6 (6).
