King Men's and Women's Tennis began the 2012-13 season at Concord University where the Tornado earned an 8-1 win while the Lady Tornado dropped a 6-3 decision.
BRISTOL, Tenn. – King Men's and Women's Tennis began the 2012-13 season on Thursday evening (Sept. 27) against the University of Concord. The men's team defeated the Mountain Lions in commanding fashion, 8-1, while the women suffered a 6-3 loss.
The Tornado, led by a squad with five of six returning players from last year's Conference Carolinas Tournament team, cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Mountain Lions, sustaining only one loss in singles play to keep them from a shutout. All-Conference Carolinas selections from a year ago, Rodrigo Avila and Pablo Vidal, each defeated their opponents with ease and allowed a combined five points against them. Avila, a native of Cuernavaca, Mexico, defeated Diogo Monterio 6-1, 6-0 to kick off singles play. Vidal followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to continue the wave of five straight singles match wins.
The Tornado swept men's doubles play, beginning with a Vidal/Avila victory (8-2) over Monterio and Danny Fonrondona. Leo Brigato and Vitor Villar followed with an 8-4 win and Patrick Jones and Rafael Francisco completed the sweep with a 9-7 win over Bill Wright and Felix Riba.
On the women's side, Karissa King and Mariana Hosomi ruled their side of the court, each winning their singles matches and then coupling for a doubles match win. King defeated Laura Leon (6-1, 6-1) in the Lady Tornado's first singles match of the evening, followed by the freshman Hosomi, who beat Savannah Taylor easily, 6-1, 6-0.
The two wins by King and Hosomi evened the team scored at three each after the Mountain Lions took a 2-1 edge in doubles play, but Concord came out with back-to-back singles victories by Kirby Mustard and Hannah Faegre to clinch the match. After the end of singles play, Concord won the match 6-3.
King and Hosomi also won their doubles match against the Concord combination of Laura Leon and Kirby Mustard by an 8-5 count.
Both teams will play Georgetown College (KY) in their next match on Oct. 12 in Georgetown, Ky. First service is set for 1 p.m.
