SAVANNAH, Ga. - The King College softball team knocked off host Savannah College of Art & Design with a 7-6 eight-inning victory and then capped Saturday with a 12-4 win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College at the 2011 Boombah Smash Hit Spring Break Tournament.
Down a run going into the seventh of the opener, King used a RBI double by Tiffany Harris (Tazewell, Va.) to tie the game at five. Fallon Thomas (Bristol, Va.) scored on the play, but the potential game-winning run was out at home later in the play.
In the Lady Tornado eighth, a single from Cassie Ringstaff (Richlands, Va.) allowed Aubree Hutt (Bristol, Va.) and Harris both to score after an error in center field.
SCAD, a 2010 NAIA National Championship qualifier, got a run in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough.
Shauna Haga (Blountville, Tenn.) had three hits in the contest with two RBIs earlier in the contest. One of the RBIs came on a second-inning triple and she later homered in the fourth.
Ringstaff, Harris and Kendall Brabson (Bean Station, Tenn.) all had two hits apiece.
Rachael Wilmoth (Morristown, Tenn.) posted her first collegiate win with two innings of work. She did not allow an earned run with one hit.
The first six batters in SCAD's lineup all had a hit including three from Brittany Gonzales who drove in two runs.
To end the day King used two 5-run innings, the first and fourth, to gain control early. All four of Brewton-Parker's runs were in the top of the third.
Ringstaff, Brabson and Christy Kooch (Knoxville, Tenn.) all had three-hit efforts for the winning side. Kooch finished with four RBIs, including a two-run double in the fifth.
Samantha Watts (Nashville, Tenn.) threw six innings and did not allow an earned run on five hits.
On Sunday the event comes to a close for the Lady Tornado when the team plays the University of Rio Grande at noon with a 2 p.m. contest against SCAD.
