Queens defeats Erskine to stay alive
BURLINGTON, N.C. – Kaitlyn Bodine pitched six innings and helped herself offensively with five runs batted in as fourth seed Queens defeated seventh seeded Erskine 10-3 in an elimination game. The game resumed Saturday in the bottom of the second after thunderstorms halted play Friday afternoon.
Queens (23-20) scored single runs in the first and second innings before breaking the game open in the third inning. Erskine (14-24-2) evened the score with a single run in the top of the third inning before the Royal offense woke up.
Bodine’s opposite-field three-run homer keyed a four-run third inning as Queens broke a 2-2 tie and took the lead for good. Bodine added a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth as the Royals scored four runs to put the game away.
Colleen Gardner and Larissa Shannon paced the Flying Fleet offense with two hits apiece, with Shannon driving in two runs. Emma Schultz led Queens with three hits while Bodine registered five runs batted in.
