Polin's home runs keep Limestone alive
BURLINGTON, N.C. – Following their first defeat of the Conference Carolinas Tournament, top seeded Limestone College had to turn around and face eighth seeded Lees-McRae College for the second time in three games. Lees-McRae grabbed the lead in the third inning, but the Saints responded by scoring in each of the next four innings to take the elimination game 5-1.
Jessica Smith started the Lees-McRae rally with a leadoff infield single in the third inning. She later scored on a Sadie Lagle double, giving the Bobcats (9-37) a 1-0 lead going to the bottom of the third. Paige Bolding reached base with a one-out single before Bailie Maybry brought her in with a single to right field, evening the score at 1-1.
Limestone pitcher Taylor Wigmore stranded a pair of Bobcats in the fourth before Leea Polin gave the Saints (30-17) a 2-1 lead with her sixth home run of the season. The Saints then added one when Bolding led off the fifth with a triple and scored on an Ashley Cox single.
Polin started the sixth with her second home run of the gaem, and seventh of the season before the Saints added another run to take a 5-1 lead. Wigmore worked around a one-out double in the seventh to keep the Saints alive.
Wigmore allowed just the one run on six hits in seven innings, only needing 80 pitches. Polin went 3-for-3 to pace the Saint offense, scoring twice and driving in two. Bolding went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Cox added two hits from the leadoff spot.
Smith led the Bobcat offense, going 2-for-3.
With the win, Limestone stays alive and faces Erskine College in another elimination game this evening while Lees-McRae is eliminated.
