GREENVILLE, S.C. - King College's Ashley Deans played her way to the NCCAA Division I Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week award, the national office announced.
Deans, a senior from Greeneville, Tenn., helped King to a second-straight NCCAA Mid-East Region Championship with 26 points in two games at the region tournament.
She started with an 11-point effort against host Covenant (Ga.) College. She was 4-for-9 overall and 3-for-3 at the free throw line with two rebounds.
In the championship contest against Oakland City (Ind.) University she posted her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Deans finished 5-for-10 which included a three-pointer and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. It was the 14th time she did not miss a free throw in a game this season. She also dished out three assists.
Overall she averaged 13.0 points by going 9-for-19 (.474) and 7-for-7 at the line with 6.0 rebounds per contest.
The weekly award was the first time a Lady Tornado had won the honor this season. Deans won the award twice a season ago with the last coming after the region championship.
King enters the NCCAA Division I National Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will play top-seeded Southwestern Assemblies of God Thursday at 5 p.m. in Winona Lake, Ind.
