Shelly Yount Joins King Women’s Basketball as Assistant

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Head women's basketball coach Josh Thompson has begun the process of building his support staff and has turned to a former player to be his top assistant. King College Athletics has announced the hiring of Shelly Yount as assistant coach to the Tornado women's basketball program, effective August 1, 2011.Shelly Yount (photo courtesy of Nyack College)

Yount comes to King College after spending last year as a graduate assistant coach for Nyack College (Nyack, NY). Prior to coaching at Nyack she played for the Warriors from 2005-10. She was a four-year starter at the center position and a three-year captain under then-head coach, Josh Thompson.

"Shelly brings a wealth of knowledge and character to our coaching staff. She is a great leader and an extremely hard worker," said Thompson. "I'm looking forward to having her on staff and I know that she will help us reach our goals as we look to build a championship program here at King College."

Yount finished her career with 1,103 points ranking her eighth in Nyack women's basketball history. She accumulated over 816 rebounds, and 195 blocks during her career. She led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in blocked shots during her sophomore and seniors seasons and finished second in the conference during her junior year. In her junior season she helped the Lady Warriors win the NCCAA East region championship which earned them a birth in the NCCAA national tournament.

During her senior year she led Nyack to a CACC regular season and conference tournament championship and was named to the all-tournament team for performance. Yount also helped the Warriors to their first ever birth to the NCAA national tournament as the school transitioned to NCAA Division II.

Yount was a two-time team Defensive Player of the Year (2007, 2008) award winner complementing her offensive impact. In addition she earned the Iron Woman Award and Comeback Player of the Year following the 2007 season. Under Thompson, Yount served as team captain for three seasons.

"I am very excited to be working at King College with the coach that I played for in college," said Yount. "I look forward to this season at King and building relationships with the people of King College and with the team. I am grateful to be able to continue coaching basketball, the sport I love, in a place where God is glorified."

The Belvidere, NJ also took her game to courts outside of Nyack when she played in Columbia, South America for Athletes in Action during the summer of 2008.

Yount graduated from Nyack with a bachelor's degree in pastoral ministry with a concentration in counseling in 2009 and returned for a Master of Arts in Intercultural studies which she finished in 2011.
