BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mount Olive closed the game on a 13-3 run in the final 6:15 to defeat King, 56-53, Saturday at the Student Center Complex. The Lady Tornado loss snapped a three-game winning streak and the team is now 12-10 and 8-10 in the Conference Carolinas.
Trailing 54-50 with 39 seconds left, freshman Stephanie Brantley (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) hit a huge three to cut the deficit to one. The Lady Tornado then had to foul the Trojans to put them to the line. Alexandra Silva made two clutch free throws with 16 seconds left to push the lead back to three, 56-53.
King still had chances to tie the game, however, Alyssa Luebs got a steal for the Trojans with six seconds left and was then fouled. Luebs missed the front end of the one-and-one to give the Lady Tornado one last chance after a rebound by sophomore Bonnie Durrett (West Paducah, Ky.). Senior Brooke Johnson's (Roan Mountain, Tenn.) desperation heave at the buzzer was off the mark though to allow Mount Olive (14-8, 10-8) to escape with a 56-53 win.
Durrett led the Lady Tornado with 13 points and nine boards, and sophomore Chelsea Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) scored 10 points. King led 33-23 at halftime, but shot just 28 percent in the second half compared to Mount Olive's 42.4 percent.
Tamara Nesmith led the comeback for the Trojans by scoring 16 of her 20 points in the second half. Nesmith also had 14 rebounds during the game to give her a double-double. Joneiqua Gary scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half for Mount Olive. Nesmith and Gary combined to score 27 of Mount Olive's 33 points in the second half.
The Lady Tornado will be back in action on Wednesday, February 20 at Limestone with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
