King in eighth after first round at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. – Fighting through difficult playing conditions all afternoon, the King University women's golf team sits in eighth place after the first 18 holes of the Pinehurst Challenge.

Elizabeth Swallow led the Tornado through the first 18 holes of play with a nine-over 81, five strokes off the pace set by Grace Glaze of Queens University and Jenna Birch of Armstrong Atlantic State University. Swallow is tied for ninth heading into Monday's final round. Anna Walker was not far behind, finishing in a tie for 22nd place in 84 strokes, 12 over par.

Cortnee Young shot a first-round 89 and was the third Tornado finisher. Kerby Jones and Karissa King rounded out the King contingent with rounds of 92 and 101 strokes, respectively.

Armstrong leads the tournament after the first round with a team score of 315, 27 strokes over par and 14 strokes clear of second-place Lee University. King is locked in a tie for eighth with Limestone College at 346 strokes.

Tournament play will conclude with 18 holes on Monday.
