Tornado Wrestling Splits Dual Meets in Ohio

King defeated Lake Erie, but came up just short against No. 13 Mercyhurst.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – King Wrestling went up against some stiff competition on Saturday against Lake Erie College and No. 13 Mercyhurst.  The Tornado earned a 21-15 victory over Lake Erie College before a furious rally came up just short against Mercyhurst.

The Tornado got off to a fast start against Lake Erie with three straight wins.  Sophomore Jerrelle McCabe (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned a decision victory over Ian Ross, 5-2 to start the day off well for King.  Sophomore Collin Crume (Mishawaka, Ind.) then won by pin at the 3:55 mark against Austin Gillihan.  Sophomore Marcelle McCabe (Virginia Beach, Va.) continued the quick start with an 8-4 decision win over Cobey Fehr.

Lake Erie responded with three straight wins of their own, including one by pin to tie the team score at 12.  Senior Dyvon Passmore (Miami, Fla.) gave King the lead again with a 3-1 decision victory against Dylan Zivcic.  Senior Brandon Tressler (Orlando, Fla.) won 4-2 over Zev Green to give King a six-point team advantage.

Freshman Cody Davis (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) lost a closely-fought decision match, 3-2, to Mike Samijlenko to make the team score 18-15.  So, it all came down to the heavyweight division contest.  Sophomore Garrett Fosdyck (Matthews, Va.) took the challenge and defeated Almonte Patrick, 4-2, to clinch the match win for the Tornado, 21-15.

In its second contest, King lost its first five matches against Mercyhurst to fall behind 17-0.  Freshman John Jones (Alabaster, Ala.) scored a victory by pin over Clint Schaefer, and Passmore won by way of decision, 10-7, against Angelo Bortoluzzi to cut into the deficit to make it 17-9, Mercyhurst.

Tressler lost a narrow decision, 5-3, to Eric Lundgren to reclaim some momentum for Mercyhurst at 20-9.  Davis and Fosdyck each scored decision victories to conclude the match, but it was not quite enough as Mercyhurst won, 20-15.

With the split for the day, the Tornado now sit at 5-3 in dual meets for the season.  The next scheduled meet for King is the Super Region II Championships in Ashland, Ohio, Feb. 23-24.
