Tornado go undefeated at Super Region II Duals

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The King University men's wrestling team traveled to Newberry College for the Super Region II Duals on Saturday and the Tornado are coming home with an undefeated record. The Tornado opened the day with a 24-21 win over University of Findlay and followed with a 24-17 victory over Shippensburg University. King capped the day by defeating Tiffin University 31-15 for their third win of the day.

King fell behind Findlay 10-0 early, but Bryce Killian got momentum back in the Tornado side with a 5-2 decision over Nicholas Skonieczny at 141 pounds. Frank Yattoni IV followed with a 2-2 win on criteria over Dalton Nicely at 149 pounds before JA Jones gave King the lead. Jones took a win by fall in 0:37 at 157 pounds to give the Tornado a 12-10 lead. After the Oilers regained an 18-12 lead with wins at 165 and 174 pounds, Blaike Henry pulled King back with a win by fall in 0:31 over Alec Bissel at 184 pounds to make the score 18-18. Findlay got three points at 197 pounds to take the lead, but Garrett Fosdyck gave King the 24-21 win when he defeated Luke Fleming on a fall in 0:51 at 285 pounds.

The Tornado followed that with another narrow match, this time with Shippensburg. The Raiders took an early 12-0 lead after the first two bouts at 125 and 133 pounds. However, King rolled off five straight wins to gain an 18-12 lead. Killian again sparked the spurt with a narrow 8-7 decision over Simon Rice at 141 pounds. Chance Smith followed with a 4-2 sudden victory over Kyle Barnes at 149 before Jones won a 6-0 decision over Mark Lentz at 157 pounds. At 165 pounds, Travis Edwards gave King a 15-12 lead when he defeated Colton Rebert on a fall in 2:45, and Jordan Reece stretched the advantage with a 6-0 decision over Brett Pastore at 174 pounds. The Raiders got within one with a win at 184, but Eldon Valery, Jr. took a 5-4 decision over Jalal Paige at 197, and Fosdyck topped Jacob Nate 6-3 at 285 to give King the 24-17 victory.

The perfect day was capped with a 31-15 win over Tiffin. Cullen King evened the match at 6-6 when he defeated Adam Green on a fall in 0:53 at 133 pounds. Killian followed with a major decision, 10-0 over Kyle Ferguson at 141 pounds to give King the lead. Yattoni stretched the lead with a 6-4 decision over Samphanh Viengmany and Jones gave the Tornado a 19-6 lead by defeating Chase Boyd on a fall in 1:16 at 157 pounds. The Tornado won on a pair of forfeits before the Dragons took the final two matches to make the final score 31-15.

King will be in action again on Thursday as they travel back to Newberry to take on the Wolves. The dual is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
