TIFFIN, Ohio – The King University men's wrestling team opened competition at the NCAA Division II Super Region II Tournament today, and are in 13th place after the first of two days. D'Marcus Spencer and Bryce Killian led the Tornado as they both advanced to the second day of competition tomorrow.
At 133 pounds, Spencer dropped his first bout of the day to Coker College's Charlie Huff on a narrow 3-1 decision. However, in the consolation bracket, he pinned UNC Pembroke's Cole Murray to advance to the second day of competition. After receiving a bye in the first round at 141 pounds, Killian defeated Ashland University's Bobby Mason 7-1 before he fell to UNC Pembroke's Daniel Owenby on a tight 3-1 decision. In his first match in the consolation bracket, Killian defeated Ryan Stope of McKendree University 8-5, advancing him to the second day.
JA Jones advanced to the quarterfinals of the 157-pound bracket after he defeated Jordan Cowell of the University of Findlay on a 9-6 decision. However, Jones dropped his next bout on a 10-2 major decision to UNC Pembroke's Justin Pencook. Jones then fell to Limestone College's Norman Manning 6-1 to end his tournament.
At 197 pounds, Eldon Valery, Jr. dropped his first bout, but rebounded with a 7-1 decision over Kobina Henriques of Ohio Valley University in the consolation bracket. Valery then faced Justin Tribble of Limestone in what was a very tight bout that went to overtime. Neither competitor was able to take the win in the first extra session as the match moved to double overtime. Tribble got the advantage in the second extra session to take the bout 3-2 in double overtime to end Valery's tournament.
The tournament concludes on Saturday with the top five finishers at each weight class qualifying for the national tournament.
