King takes Virginia Duals title

HAMPTON, Va. – The King University men's wrestling capped a solid weekend with a program first, winning the Virginia Duals. The Tornado opened the day with a 34-11 win over Apprentice School in the semifinals before topping Liberty University 30-8 in the championship match.

HOW IT HAPPENED APPRENTICE SCHOOL

  • The Tornado fell behind the Builders, but King responded with four straight wins to gain the advantage. Fourth-ranked Dustin Kirk got the Tornado going with a 2:39 pin over Kolin Johnson at 133 pounds.
  • Bryce Killian followed with a 15-0 technical fall over Shalek Colon and Landon Goforth gave King a 17-3 lead with a 2:29 pin of Ty Boyd.
  • At 157 pounds, Matthew Danner came away with a 15-0 technical fall over Trey Emory.
  • Darius Rutland and Kody Eichlin gave King back-to-back wins at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Rutland pinned Jeremy Moseley in 6:48 and Eichlin topped William Sorey 10-5.
  • Eldon Valery, Jr. capped the 34-11 King win with a 2-0 decision over Zach Sintobin at 285 pounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED LIBERTY

  • Reed Jacks got the Tornado off to a good start with a 9-7 decision over Keegan Smith at 125 pounds and Kirk followed with an 11-3 major decision over Blake Justis.
  • Killian took a 15-0 technical fall over Reid Stewart to give King a 12-0 lead after three bouts.
  • Goforth earned a 9-5 decision over Chad Cantroll at 149 pounds and Danner stretched the Tornado advantage to 18-0 with an 11-7 decision over Andrew Brugette.
  • The Flames got on the board with back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 pounds, but the Tornado closed out the match with three straight victories.
  • Eichlin defeated Josh McIlhenny 11-6 at 184 pounds and Elijah Seay earned a 2-0 victory over Taylor Westlake at 197 pounds.
  • Valery capped the 30-8 victory with a pin of Dominick Johnson in 4:41 at 285 pounds.
