BRISTOL, Tenn. - The King College women's soccer team scored quickly against Lees-McRae (N.C.) College Wednesday, but three unanswered goals by the visitors proved to be too much for the Lady Tornado in a 4-1 decision.
Morgan Shelton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) tied the contest at 1-1 with her second goal of the season in the fifth minute. Her score was assisted by Hannah Shankle (Bristol, Va.). Shelton followed a score by Lees-McRae's Mary Beth Sullivan which came in just the second minute off a breakaway. The first goal by Shelton in 2010 came against Anderson (S.C.) University on Sept. 8.
Lees-McRae followed with an eighth-minute score by Brooke Santerre with an assist from Sullivan. Neither team could add to the score for the rest of the first half. Santerre added an insurance score with a penalty kick goal in the 56th minute of play. The final Lees-McRae goal was booted home by Vickie Rich with an assist credited to Santerre in the 59th minute.
Overall the Lady Tornado just had two shots and both were on goal. Lees-McRae had 20 shots, 13 on goal. The foul count was six for King and 10 for Lees-McRae.
King's Abbey Kitts (Tazewell, Va.) had nine saves in 73 minutes of action. Brittany Bolton stopped the other Lady Tornado shot as she played the opening 73 minutes for Lees-McRae.
The Lady Tornado went to 0-6 on the season while Lees-McRae has a 5-2 record.
Lees-McRae was flagged for offsides 14 times in the contest with 11 coming in the opening 45 minutes. On the flip side King only had five, four of which were in the final half. In the Lady Tornado's opening five contest of 2010 the team had just two offside calls.
Next on the schedule for King is a home contest with Young Harris (Ga.) College on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.
