Belmont Abbey Defeats King, 3-1
Belmont Abbey scored first and quickly off the opening kickoff. Mateo scored unassisted just 12 seconds into the game taking the ball the length of the field and scoring her eighth goal of the season against freshman goaltender, Amanda Huffaker (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Huffaker made her first start of her young Tornado career and allowed three goals in her second bit of action on the year. Mateo struck for a second time in the 30th minute to extend the lead to two goals. Five minutes later, Silvia Vazquez converted at header off of a corner by Hannah Kohls to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead before King retaliated.
Morgan Shelton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored her ninth goal of the season on a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box. Her goal in the 86th minute made it a 3-1 contest, but that was all the closer King got to Belmont Abbey.
Huffaker made five saves on the day and faced 13 total Abbey shots while her team put together five on the day, three on goal.
With the loss, King falls to 5-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Conference Carolinas play. The Lady Tornado will play on the road again on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Barton College (3-9, 2-7) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. King has three matches remaining, all in league play, before the conference tournament begins.
The top eight teams in the league standings will advance to the conference tournament. King currently holds on to the eighth position and is one game ahead of North Greenville University and hold the tiebreaker with a 2-0 win over the Crusaders back on Oct. 12.
