Hicks, Spears earn TSWA Athlete of the Week honors

BRISTOL, Tenn. – In what has been an exciting week for King University soccer, two student-athletes earned weekly honors from the Tennessee Sportswriters Association. Chris Hicksearned Men's Soccer Player of the Week and Rayna Spears earned the same distinction on the women's side.

In a victory at Trevecca Nazarene University, the Glaucester, England, native scored what proved to be the game-winner on a shot to the left corner of the net from 12 yards away, giving the Tornado a 2-0 lead in the 76th minute of an eventual 2-1 win.

The freshman also scored the opening goal in the ninth minute of King's 3-2 overtime loss to Mount Olive. Hicks was on the left edge of the 18-yard box when he fired a shot that clipped a defender's back, then grazed the inside edge of the post and buzzed into the back of the net past a diving keeper.

Spears was named the women's soccer player of the week after scoring a goal and tallying an assist to help the Tornado clinch a berth in the conference tournament last week.

The Smyrna, Tenn., native opened the scoring in the seventh minute with her fifth goal of the season in Saturday's 5-1 win over Mount Olive. Lindsay Curtis played a corner kick into the box, which bounced and fell to Spears' feet and was sent into the net. In the 77th minute, Spears played a long ball to Paula Doran, who tapped a pass to Cassie Garland three yards in front of the goal that Garland scored on for the final goal of the match.

Spears ranks second on the club with five goals and 11 points this season. King posted a 1-0 victory over No. 1-seed Lees-McRae on Monday for the program's first-ever Conference Carolinas Tournament win and plays at Pfeiffer University on Thursday in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m.
