GREENVILLE, S.C. - King College swept this week's NCCAA Women's and Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week awards with Virginie Brioschi and Jose Avila winning the honors.
Brioschi (Geneva, Switzerland) was 4-0 on the week thanks to two three-set wins in singles' play. She started the week with a 9-8 (7-5) win with teammate Neroce Stoltz (Witbank, South Africa) in No. 1 doubles' action over rival Milligan (Tenn.) College. Brioschi then rallied to win the No. 1 singles' contest 4-6, 7-5 and 6-4.
On Friday Brioschi once again was a part of an 8-1 doubles' win and then came from behind to win No. 1 singles 5-7, 6-3 and 10-6 at Averett (Va.).
Avila was 2-0 at No. 1 singles' with a easy 6-0 and 6-1 win against Milligan then a 6-3, 1-6 and 10-5 decision at Averett. In doubles he was 1-1 on the week with a victory in the Milligan contest and then the lone setback at Averett as both had similar 8-2 scores.
For Brioschi this is the third time she has won the NCCAA award in the spring season. Avila has played his way to the NCCAA honor for a third time while a member of the King tennis team has won the award eight times in the 2010-11 season.
King will travel to UNC Asheville for a 3 p.m. contest Thursday.
