King sweeps Belmont Abbey for first conference win
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's tennis team defeated Belmont Abbey in dominant fashion on Saturday, earning the Tornado their first conference win of the year on the strength of a 9-0 victory.
The closest match of the day came at No. 2 singles, where Naomi Reyes battled Lydia Schellenberg into the third set. Reyes took the first set 6-1 before Schellenberg rebounded with a 6-2 decision to force the match into the third. But Reyes was able to win 10-6 to keep King's perfect afternoon intact.
The Tornado won decisively in all the other singles matches. Katya Cerny took a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 1 position, while Mariana Hosomi won 6-2, 6-0 at the third flight. Alyssa Salazar took a 6-0, 6-1 and Claudia Morris won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Haley Moloney rounded out singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the sixth flight.
The top doubles team of Salazar and Cerny dispatched with their opponents 8-4. Morris and Moloney won by identical scores at No. 3 doubles, while Hosomi and Reyes swept at the second flight.
King returns to action on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. in a nonconference matchup with Bluefield State College.
