BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's tennis team closed the regular season in style on Saturday when they hosted Southern Wesleyan University. The Tornado defeated the Warriors 9-0 for their first clean sweep since March 1, and third sweep of the season.
King (9-15) set the tone early as the No. 2 doubles team of Mariana Hosomi and Naomi Reyes took an 8-0 Raquel Halvorsen and Samantha Gallbreath of Southern Wesleyan (1-12). The No. 3 doubles duo of Claudia Morris and Haley Maloney topped Megan Pressley and Rebecca Furr 8-1 before Alyssa Salazar and Katya Cerny defeated Elizabeth Mulkey and Brooke Strickland 8-2 at No. 1 doubles to give King a 3-0 lead.
The Tornado didn't slow down in singles play, taking five matches by the score of 6-0, 6-0. Reyes started this streak by defeating Strickland at No. 2 singles while Hosomi and Salazar continued the trend with victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Morris and Maloney capped the run with victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, and Cerny took her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) to give the Tornado the clean sweep.
Earlier this week, King qualified for their first Conference Carolinas Tournament where they will be the seventh seed. The Tornado will take on second seeded Pfeiffer University on Friday at 9:00 a.m., in Sumter, S.C.
