BRISTOL, Tenn. – King Athletics and Head Coach Peter Dalton are pleased to announce the hiring of Chelsea Leavell as assistant coach for the men's and women's track and field team. She will specialize in coaching the throws events after an All-American career at Milligan College where she set multiple school records.
Leavell was a regular at the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships following a stellar high school career at Pope John Paul High School in Hendersonville, Tenn. As a sophomore, she finished in fourth place in the shot put at the Division II Tennessee State Track Meet and followed with runner-up finishes in each of the next two years. As a senior, she also added a third place overall finish in the discus at the State Meet.
"I am very excited and blessed to have this opportunity to coach throws at King and to be able to add to my coaching and recruiting experience within NCAA Division II," said Leavell. "I think that being a younger coach and my experience as a collegiate athlete will help build upon our team's knowledge and skills."As a member of the Buffaloes track and field team, she was a three-time NAIA Indoor National Championships attendee and twice appeared in the NAIA Outdoor National Championships competing in the weight throw, discus, and shot put. Her best finish came in the shot put as a senior where she placed 12th overall. Altogether, she put together three top-15 finishes in national competition including a pair of 13th place finishes in the 2009 Championships in the shot put and the 2010 Championships in the weight throw.
While at Milligan, Leavell set five different school records in the shot put, weight throw, discus and hammer throws, and javelin toss. She set personal bests in the weight throw (16.17m), shot put (13.22m), discus (42.73m), hammer throw (46.87m), and javelin (35.51m) in setting those records which still stand today.
Dalton said of the hire, "I'm excited to bring on an All-American athlete and energetic young coach like Chelsea that can take the program to the next level. She is going to be a great addition to the staff and we cannot wait to get to work for the upcoming season."
In November 2010, Leavell also attended and participated in an international shot put clinic alongside Olympian Dylan Armstrong of the Canadian national team.
