Henry, Kennedy set school records at App. State Invite
BOONE, N.C. – The King University women's track and field team opened their indoor season at the Appalachian Invitational hosted by Appalachian State University, and finished first among six non Division I teams. Maegan Henry broke her own school record in the indoor shot put, and matched her record in the weight throw while Jaleessa Kennedy set a school record in the triple jump.
On Thursday night, Henry posted a toss of 14.85 meters in the weight throw to match her previous best which was achieved last year at the same event. On Friday, the Bluefield, Va., native shattered her record of 12.28 meters in the shot put. Her toss of 13.33 bested that mark that was set a season ago at the same event. Henry finished fourth in both events.
In her first career meet, Kennedy set a school record in the triple jump as she finished third. Her leap of 11.06 meters bested Atlanta Westbrook's mark of 11.03 meters that was set last season.
Melissa Arnold and Taylor Rasmussen also turned in solid weight throw performances, each setting personal bests. Arnold's toss over 12.44 meters topped her previous best of 12.31 meters while Rasmussen posted a personal record toss of 11.02 meters.
Alexis Robinson had a very good all-around day for the Tornado. She nearly set a personal record in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.56 seconds, and posted a time of 26.86 secons in the 200 meter dash, only two tenths of a second off her personal best time. She also ran a solid first leg of the 4x400 meter relay that finished with a time of 4:42.18.
In the high jump, Shelbie Burchfield came within 0.02 meters of her school record as she placed eighth overall, but first among non NCAA Division I competitors with her jump of 1.60 meters.
The Tornado finished first of six non NCAA Division I teams at the even with 133 points. Livingstone College came in second with 76 points and Mars Hill University finished third at 67.
King will have a few weeks off before their next meet, the Wake Forest Invitational. The meet will take place at the JDL FastTrack in Winston-Salem, N.C., on January 11.
