MONTREAT, N.C. - King College was defeated 3-2 at Montreat (N.C.) College Thursday in women's volleyball action.
The Lady Tornado was up 2-0 after back-to-back 25-22 set wins. Montreat, leaders of the Appalachian Athletic Conference, then used scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 11-15 to come from behind.
Thursday's match was the fifth five-set match King had played in 2010, going 2-3 in the full matches.
Morgan Machen (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the attack with 20 digs which ties her season high. Kelsey Griffitts (Bristol, Va.) added a season-high 15 kills while Sarah Van Goethem (Aurora, Colo.) also recorded 13 kills for a season best for the sophomore. Kaitlyn Musick (Weber City, Va.) was credited with 10 kills.
Shannon Earwood (Carson City, Nev.) provided 51 assists and 16 digs which was a season-best for her in the dig category and her fourth double-double of the season.
Rachel Harding (Abingdon, Va.) led the squad in digs with 21, her fifth 20-plus dig effort in 2010.
King went to 18-5 on the season while Montreat has a 20-8 record. The two got together in Bristol on Sept. 8 with King winning a 3-0 match. The setback also snapped a 12-match winning streak over Montreat that stretched back to the 2005 season.
The Lady Tornado will play Montevallo (Ala.) and USC-Aiken Friday as part of the Pacer Volleyball Invitational, hosted by USC-Aiken. The meeting with Montevallo will be at 5 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. contest with host USC-Aiken.
