King Sweeps Past Pfeiffer, 3-0

King won its fifth straight match with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-22) win over Pfeiffer as Summer Kremer led the Lady Tornado with 16 kills.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – King defeated Pfeiffer, 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-22), in Conference Carolinas play Friday night at the Student Center Complex.  Summer Kremer led the Lady Tornado with 16 kills while Lauren Willoughby and Brooke Calhoun led the team defensive with nine digs apiece.

King (8-5, 3-0 Conference Carolinas) led for most of the first set, including a six-point lead at 16-10, but Pfeiffer (2-9, 1-3) rallied to have two set points.  With Pfeiffer leading 24-22, King saved one of the set points thanks to an error by the Falcons.  Olivia Underwood (Pearland, Texas) then served two straight aces to give King a set point at 25-24.  Kremer then put away her fifth kill of the opening frame to give King the game, 26-24.

The Lady Tornado cruised in the second set, 25-11, behind 16 kills and a .542 hitting percentage in the set as a team. Eight of team's 16 kills came from sophomore Summer Kremer (Mills River, N.C.).

The third set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than three points in the entire set.  After Head Coach Chris Toomey called a timeout with Pfeiffer leading 13-10, the Lady Tornado took the next five points regain the lead, 15-13.  The Falcons came back to tie the score at 22.  Pfeiffer then committed a service error to give the advantage back to King where junior Kelsey Griffitts (Bristol, Va.) followed with a kill to give the Lady Tornado two chances at match point with the score 24-22. King only needed one of them as the Falcons committed an attack error to allow the Lady Tornado to sweep the Falcons in three.

Kremer led the Lady Tornado with 16 kills and hit at a .364 clip for the match. Freshman Lauren Willoughby (Cary, N.C.) registered four kills on eight attempts with no errors, good for a .500 kill rate. She was one of three Lady Tornado members to have two service aces, joining Grace and Olivia Underwood (Pearland Texas) to account for the team's seven aces overall. Willoughby and Brooke Calhoun (Jonesborough, Tenn.) paced the team defensively, each tallying nine digs.

Pfeiffer won the battle at the net with 6.0 total team blocks to King's 3.0. The Falcons were led by Kelly Lancellot, who finished with two solo blocks and three block assists while also leading the team with eight kills.

King plays a doubleheader tomorrow, Sept. 21, at the Student Center Complex.  The first match is a Conference Carolinas tilt with Queens University of Charlotte at noon, and the other match is against Lander University with a tentative start time scheduled for 5:00 p.m. In between King's two matches, the Bearcats and Royals will play a nonconference game, set to begin at 3 p.m.
