BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Lady Tornado volleyball team improved to 13-10 overall and 7-3 in Conference Carolinas play after defeating the Barton Bulldogs on "Blackout Barton" night at the Student Center Complex. King won in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17, 25-18. Summer Kremer led the Lady Tornado with 14 kills while freshman Olivia Underwood handed out 22 assists in the win.
King wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead with an 8-2 run to begin the first game, forcing the Bulldogs to use their first timeout of the set. Barton brought a six-point deficit to three on multiple occasions, but never got any closer. Summer Kremer (Mills River, N.C.) put down her fourth kill of the game, coupled with a service ace from Olivia Underwood, and two Barton setting errors to gain a 1-0 advantage, 25-18.
Kremer came back with six kills in the second set, helping King break out to a 9-3 run and build a 17-13 lead. King hit at its best attack rate, converting 15-of-31 attack attempts (.355) and committing just four errors. Conversely , Barton hit at its worst clip in the contest, hitting .138 on 9-of-29 attempts. King closed out the second set converting four of their last five attack attempts from the trio of Kremer, Grace Underwood, and Kelsey Griffitts.
The Lady Tornado closed up shop against Barton with a 25-18 set win, concluding the match. King forced the Bulldogs into using their first timeout with the score 9-5 where Barton turned around to tie the game at 14 points. King returned the favor scoring the next six points with help from three Barton errors. A mixed attack from Jordan Baty, Grace Underwood, and Heather Harvey helped the Lady Tornado score five of the last nine points en route to the win. Underwood and Harvey each posted a pair of kills in that run.
Kremer finished with 14 kills on 28 attempts, committing only three errors in the process for a .393 hit percentage. She also had a share for the team lead in blocks with three assists.
Jordan Baty (Wilmington, N.C.) registered six kills on 12 attempts (.500) while Mariah Herington and Grace Underwood each had four kills. Underwood shared that team lead with three blocks assists with Kremer.
Olivia Underwood (Pearland, Texas) led the Lady Tornado with 22 assists and was one of three players with two services aces. Payton Tipton (Cleveland, Tenn.) was one of those players and added a team-best nine digs.
King led at the net with 5.0 total team blocks to Barton's 2.0. They did so behind 10 total blocks assists.
Kati Wood led the Bulldogs with a double-double behind an 11-kill, 10-dig effort. Meredith Watkins added nine kills while libero Chelsea Fleury tallied 11 digs.
King (13-10, 7-3) will play its next five matches on the road, beginning with the Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. All five matches are against Conference Carolinas competition. The Lady Tornado is currently in second place in the West Division, one game behind leader Erskine College.
