Erskine Takes Down King in Three

Three Lady Tornado players tallied double-digit digs, led by sophomore Payton Tipton who had 21 in a 3-0 loss to the Flying Fleet.

DUE WEST, S.C. – Lady Tornado Volleyball lost a 3-0 decision to the Erskine Flying Fleet, 25-12, 25-17, 25-23. The loss drops King to 14-14 overall and 8-7 in Conference Carolinas play. Three players tallied double digit dig counts, led by Payton Tipton's 21. They will play their final four games at the Student Center Complex, beginning with a tri-match with Montevallo and Concord (WV) on Monday, Oct. 29.

Erskine won the first two sets easily though were contested in the third set. Both teams battled in the final set, never separating by more than two points until King took a 20-17 advantage via a pair of service aces by Payton Tipton (Cleveland, Tenn.). Coming out of a timeout, the Flying Fleet scored the next three points to tie the game at 20 before both teams swapped the next three points. Tied at 23, an attack error plus Lauren Stewart's 10th kill of the night clinched the win, 25-23.

Summer Kremer (Mills River, N.C.) led the Lady Tornado with seven kills, followed by freshman Grace Underwood (Pearland, Texas) who ended with six. Sister Olivia Underwood (Pearland, Texas) put up 19 of the team's 24 assists.

Three Lady Tornado players had 10 or more digs, led by sophomore defensive specialist Payton Tipton. Her 21 digs led King while Maribeth Kern (Buchanan, Va.) tallied 12 and Olivia Underwood registered 10.

Erskine hit more effectively than King, finishing at a .208 attack percentage to King's .048 team attack percentage. The Flying Fleet were led by Caitlin Bullock's 13 kills. Four different players had 10 or more digs for the Fleet.

King (14-14, 8-7) now have one Conference Carolinas game remaining. They will conclude the regular season against Limestone College on Nov. 2 at the Student Center. Prior to that match, King will play three additional home game beginning on Monday, Oct. 29 in a tri-match against Montevallo (2 p.m.) and Concord (6 p.m.).
