  • King earns AVCA Team Academic Award

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – For the fourth straight year since becoming NCAA Division II members, the King University women’s volleyball team has earned American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. The AVCA Team Academic Award honors collegiate and high school teams that maintain at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – Along with time comes change, and for the first time in three decades, some with a last name other than Toomey will be leading the King University women’s volleyball program. Following an exhaustive search that included a more than 70 applicants, King alumnus Morris Cephas was announced as King’s next women’s volleyball head coach.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – On Friday, Heather Claussen was named the King University interim head volleyball coach. Claussen was an assistant under previous head coach Chris Toomey this past season as Toomey resigned earlier this month.

Following a stellar senior campaign, King women’s volleyball player Kelsey Griffitts earned the distinction when the awards were released on Wednesday.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – Chris Toomey has resigned as King University's head women's volleyball coach to accept the position of Next Generation Director at St. John Church in St. Louis, Mo. Toomey ended his tenure as women's volleyball head coach on high note, leading the Tornado to an overall record of 32-5 and their first Conference Carolinas championship.

    BELMONT, N.C. – The King University women’s volleyball team’s season came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the fell to top seeded Belmont Abbey College in the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship match. The Tornado came within one point of taking the first set, but the Crusaders scored the final three points of the frame take the set and the momentum as the took the 3-0 win.

When it comes to postseason play, that’s what it’s all about, and that’s exactly what the King University women’s volleyball team did on Wednesday night at the Student Center Complex. The Tornado fought through some adversity as their defense carried them to a 3-1 win over sixth seeded Limestone College to advance to the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship match on Saturday.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Conference Carolinas co-champion King University women’s volleyball team had six players honored by the league on Wednesday. Payton Tipton led this group as she was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year while Kelsey Griffitts, Summer Kremer and Olivia Underwood all garnered first team honors.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – It wasn’t always easy, but the King University women’s volleyball team advanced to the Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinals with a 3-0 sweep of seventh seeded Converse College on Saturday. Kelsey Griffitts, Summer Kremer and Grace Underwood paced the Tornado attack that hit over .300 in the final two sets.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Conference Carolinas office announced its Academic All-Conference team for women’s volleyball on Wednesday morning, with six King University student-athletes earning a selection based on their outstanding work in the classroom. King had the most representatives of any conference school, as no other institution had more than four student-athletes receive Academic All-Conference honors.

    BRSITOL, Tenn. – For the first time since joining Conference Carolinas, and the first time in five years, the King University women’s volleyball team is conference champions. The Tornado defeated Mount Olive College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Student Center Complex to earn a share of the Conference Carolinas title, going 17-1 in league play.

    BRSITOL, Tenn. – After clinching their first Conference Carolinas championship earlier in the afternoon, the King University women’s volleyball team capped the regular season with a 3-0 sweep of crosstown rival Virginia Intermont College. Senior Kelsey Griffitts led the attack on Senior Day with nine kills and an attack percentage of .562.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women’s volleyball team continued to play at a high level on Wednesday when the swept a pair of matches at a home triangular. The Tornado first defeated nonconference foe Saint Augustine’s University 25-11, 25-17, 25-19 before topping Conference Carolinas opponent Converse College 25-13, 25-21, 25-17 to sweep the day.

    GAFFNEY, S.C. – The King University women’s volleyball team faced some adversity on the road Friday night at Limestone College. The Tornado led the match 2-1, but fell behind by eight points early in the fourth set. However, the King offense awoke and dug out of the hole to close the match on a 21-5 run to take the 3-1 Conference Carolinas victory 25-21, 14-25, 25-19, 25-17.

The Tornado got off to a slow start, but King’s serving and defense carried them to the 3-0 sweep of Erskine College in Conference Carolinas play.

    MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Playing their third match on a four-day road trip, the King University women’s volleyball team had to come back to defeat Mount Olive College. The Tornado dropped the first set 26-24, but rebounded to take the final three 25-18, 25-13, 25-13 for the win.

    WILSON, N.C. – Following their first loss in nearly two months, the King University women’s volleyball team responded with an emphatic road win against Barton College. The Tornado cruised to a 25-14 first set victory before taking the final two sets 25-13 and 25-14 to take the clean sweep from the Bulldogs.

    BELMONT, N.C. – In what was one of the biggest matches of the year, the King University women’s volleyball team traveled to take on Belmont Abbey College in a raucous Wheeler Center with first place in Conference Carolinas on the line. The Crusader defense kept the King offense off balance all night en route to the 3-0 sweep, ending King’s 19-match winning streak.

    BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University started their home match against North Greenville University on fire and never looked back as they took the clean sweep, 25-12, 25-21, 25-18 over the Crusaders. With the win, King extends their winning streak to 19 matches, pushes their Conference Carolinas record to 9-0.

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The King University women’s volleyball team jumped out of conference to take on Johnson C. Smith University and Morris College in a triangular on Saturday. The Tornado took the first match from Morris 3-0 (25-8, 25-10, 25-10) before defeating the host Golden Bulls 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-18).

    BANNER ELK, N.C. – The King University women’s volleyball team continued to stay hot, even when they took to the road on Friday night. The Tornado traveled to Conference Carolinas rival Lees-McRae College and kept their perfect league record intact as King topped the Bobcats 3-0.
