BRISTOL, Tenn. – On a night capped with two National Champions, two second place finishes and the successful defense of their No. 2 team ranking, King also featured 13 members of the team on the 2012 WCWA All-American team.
With their appearances in their weight class final bout, wrestlers Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas), Krista Revelle (Meriden, Kan.), Alli Ragan (Cardondale, Ill.), and Sarah Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind.) all earned All-American bids. For Ragan and Martin, it served as their second times named to the honor.
The 116-pound weight class was represented well as three Tornado grapplers were tabbed to the All-American team with their performances at the WCWA National Championships. Samantha Klingel placed fourth after finishing the day 4-2. The freshman fell in the third place bout against Kalin Knight-Alvarez (Menlo) in a decision that needed all three periods to find a winner (6-2, 2-2, 2-1). Bartosch and Victoria Nguyen (Johnson City, Tenn.) also earned All-American births out of the 116-pound division.
King had multiple representatives in the 123 and 170-pound divisions, as well. Sarah Hildebrandt and Stacy Martin (Frisco, Texas) finished second and seventh, respectively, at 123. Julia Salata (Canton, Mich.) and Rebecca Mattes (Randolph, N.J.) finished fourth and seventh at 170 pounds.
The most spirited All-American was no doubt Katarina Perez (El Centro, Calif.) who willed her way to a third place finish in an upset win over OCU's Brieana Delgado (130#). Perez, ranked eighth, lost to Delgado in the second round earlier in the day (0-6, 1-0, 3-1) but rattled off three wins in a row, two by pin, to get into the medal round. After falling 1-0 in the first period, Perez waited for the proper time to strike and with 25 seconds left went in for the takedown. Flipping Delgado on her back, Perez pinned to No. 4 (123#) ranked grappler with 20 seconds remaining on the clock for the win.
The top-eight finishers at the WCWA National Championships comprise the All-American teams each season.
In other awards handed out during the national tournament, Emily Martin was awarded the top individual honor by being named the 2012 WCWA Wrestler of the Year.
One King Tornado earned a place on the WCWA Scholar-Athlete team. Victoria Nguyen met the criteria necessary to be one of four athletes named to the honor. To be eligible, wrestlers must be of sophomore status or higher, have at least one year wrestling for their institution and possess a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
King was also one of the four teams awarded a scholastic award for one of the top team GPAs in the WCWA. Menlo College, Missouri Valley and Oklahoma City University were also named to the list of teams with at least 10 wrestlers and a team GPA of 3.00 or higher.
