BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University Women's Wrestling had a successful opening day to the 2013 Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) Nationals Championships by placing a total of 10 wrestlers in the semifinal rounds of the 10 represented weight classes. An addition seven Lady Tornado still have the chance to place in the top-8 and earn All-American honors in this year's national tournament, held at the Student Center Complex at King University (Bristol, Tenn.).
King's Ashley Iliff and Shannon Constantine met in the winner's bracket quarterfinals where a three-period standoff ensued between the two teammates. Constantine shut out Iliff, 3-0, in the first period before the freshman edged out a 4-3 win to even the bout. Constantine kept Iliff scoreless in a 1-0, bout-deciding period.
Constantine will now match up in one of the two semifinal bouts against top-seed Emily Webster (OCU) who has pinned both of her opponents thus far in the tournament.
Caitlyn Chase (Missouri Baptist) and Darby Huckle (Simon Fraser) will comprise the other 101 semifinal. Huckle did not allow a point in two matches, defeating Angela Fragoso (NW Kansas) and Brianna Rahall (OCU) by a combined 15-0.
King's Kayla Barnes (Rock Hill, S.C.) went 0-2 at 101 and has been eliminated.
Defending WCWA champion Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas/KU) remains in the winner's bracket as the No. 2 seed, defeating Savanna Nobile (Lindenwood) by first-period pin followed by a shutout victory over Taylor Zboray (Midland), 1-0, 2-0. She will face Amy Fearnside (Jamestown) who has two pins to her name in the tournament.
The other 109 semifinal will consist of OCU's Kristie Garr and top-seeded Victoria Anthony (SFU). Anthony took an Olympic redshirt in 2011-12 and served as an alternate for the U.S. team.
Tori Degginger (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) went 0-2 at 109 and has been eliminated.
Two Lady Tornado wrestlers have advanced to the 116-pound semifinals and could potentially meet in the finals with wins Saturday morning. Kayla Brendlinger (Slippery Rock, Pa.) defeated Lilian Salinas (Waldorf) via pin followed by Menlo's Kalin Knight-Alvarez (5-2, 3-0) and will wrestle No. 1 seed Joey Miller (OCU), who pinned both of her previous opponents.
On the other side of the bracket, Samanthat Klingel (Kresgeville, Pa.) rolled in wins over Nallely Carillo (Wayland Baptist) by pin and a decision over Shelby Morrison (OCU). She will face Jacarra Winchester (Missouri Valley), the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Victoria Nguyen (Johnson City, Tenn.) remains alive in the consolation bracket after losing in her first bout of the day. She will vie for a place in the wrestle-back quarterfinals against Shelby Morrison (OCU). Marina Sanchez (Riverside, Calif.) is in the same position and will wrestle Logan Rich (OCU).
Victoria Gomez (Baldwin Park, Calif.) went 1-2 at 116 and has been eliminated.
The 123-pound weight class also features two KU grapplers in the winner's bracket semis. Favorite Sarah Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind.) is 2-0 with one pin and will face Tiffany Sluik (Jamestown) for a spot in the finals.
Teammate Katarina Perez, who won a dramatic third place match in last year's championships, is set to open day two against Brieana Delgado (OCU). Perez pinned Gina Carpenter (SFU) to open her day and then ran away with a 3-2, 7-0 decision over Kaitlyn Eddy (OCU) to advance.
After pinning her first opponent, Kayla Bartosch dropped a close 2-0, 2-1 decision to Delgado. She earned her second victory by pin over Mabel Flores (Pacific). She will fight to stay alive against Eddy, Saturday.
Helen Maroulis (SFU) will open Saturday with a quarterfinal match against OCU's Audrey Moorehouse. The two combined for two technical falls and a pin in their opening bouts, Friday.
On the other side of the bracket, Randi Beltz (Missoui Valley) and Shauna Isbell (Lindenwood) have survived to meet in Saturday's quarterfinal round.
King does not have any wrestlers participating at 130 pounds.
Top seed Ali Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) has advanced to the 136-pound quarterfinal following a pair of tech fall victories over Julie Johnsen (Waldorf) and Brittney Gladd (Cumberlands). The reigning national runner-up will take on Kayla Aggio (OCU) for the right to battle either Bailey Martinez (Pacific) or Monica Ramirez (Lindenwood) for the title.
Evalyn Reyna (Austin, Texas) dropped her first match of the day to Laura Gordon (SFU) but rebounded nicely with back-to-back wins by pin followed by a decision win over Julie Johnsen in three periods (2-2, 6-0, 4-1). She will face Sarah Bollinger (Missouri Baptist) for the chance to wrestle in the consolation quarters.
Stacy Martin (Frisco, Texas) won her first bout of the day but lost the following two after a shoulder injury slowed her attack. She has been eliminated from the tournament.
*The results erroneously indicate Alli Ragan lost by TF in her second bout. She won that bout by the same score*
After pinning Alexia Osburn (Lindenwood), sophomore Amanda Hendey (Beaumont, Calif.) was upset by Sidney Morrison (SFU) in a three-period decision. She remains a threat for a third-place finish as she starts Saturday with a match against Alexis Walker (Lindenwood).
Julia Salata, ranked second, shut out Kaleigh Jennings (Cumberlands) before easily dispensing Monika Podgoski (SFU) in 96 seconds via pin. She has a place set in the quarterfinals with Demi Strub (OCU).
Freshman Jackie Williams (Whittier, Calif.) earned a win in her first bout but lost in an early pin to Jordan Hagerman (Missouri Valley). She bounced back with two wins to stay alive in the wrestle-back bracket, pinning her last opponent in 33 seconds.
Lorrie Ramos (Orlando, Fla.) has a place in the 170-pound quarterfinals against No. 1 seed Justina Distasio (SFU), who has not allowed a point in two bout and has one pin this tournament. Ramos also has not allowed a point in two decision wins, defeating her opponents by a combined 14-0.
Brittany David (Lindenwood) and Brittney Roberts (OCU) comprise the other quarterfinal bout.
Kerri Bumpers (Hampton, Va.) earned a 1-0, 1-0 win in her first match but fell to Distasio to place her in the wrestle-back bracket.
After suffering her first defeat in nearly three years of competition, freshman Malexis McAdoo (Amarillo, Texas) has jumped out with two wins, one of which by pin in less than 30 seconds. She then beat Juliana Triplett (Missouri Baptist) in a bruising 0-1, 4-0, 3-1 decision to advance her to the heavyweight semis. She will take on top-seed Jenna McLatchy (SFU) with the winner set to wrestle the winner of Angela Vyborny (Wayland Baptist) and Heather O'Connor (OCU).
Freshman Kieara Allison (Vallejo, Calif.) lost both of her opening bouts and has been eliminated.
Saturday's action will begin at 10 a.m. inside the Student Center Complex at King University. After all of the winner's bracket and consolation rounds are complete, the finals rounds will begin at 4 p.m. The top eight in each weight class earn All-American honors. The top three in each weight class automatically qualify to participate in the Junior World Team qualifier for next year's squad.
