LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Members of the King University women's wrestling team competed in the Asics Las Vegas U.S. Open over the weekend. At the 59-kilo weight class, Alli Ragan won her first US Open title while Samantha Klingel qualified for her first Senior World Team based on her finish at the event.
Ragan defeated Sunkist Club's Deanna Betterman 3-0, 5-0 to win her first US Open championship. The win also gives Ragan a bye all the way to the best out of three finals at the Senior World Team Trials in the 59-kilo weight class.
At the 51-kilo weight class, Samantha Klingel defeated Air Force's Christina Varland 3-0, 2-1 to finish in fifth place. With this result, she also qualified for her first Senor World Team Trials.
Sarah Hildebrandt took home a fourth place finish at the 55-kilo weight class after dropping a decision to Shauna Isbell of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club 1-0, 0-2, 1-0. At the same weight, Kayla Brendlinger defeated teammate Victoria Nguyen on a decision, 0-1, 1-0, 1-1 to take fifth place.
Julia Salata advanced to the semifinals in the 67-kilo weight class, but she fell there to Tamyrah Mensah from Wayland. Salata then had to withdraw from the competition due to an injury.
The Tornado will be in action again on May 12th at the Body Bar National Championships in Lakeland, Fla.
