Ragan, Salata compete for Team USA
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – King University women's wrestlers Alli Ragan and Julia Salata traveled to Albuquerque to compete for Team USA against Team Russia in an international dual. Both wrestlers faced familiar foes, but both dropped decisions to their Russian counterparts. However, Team USA came away with a 7-4 win.
At 67 kg, Salata, a former Junior World Team member squared off against Russia's Svetlana Babushkina who Salata fell to in the finals of the Lady Klippan Open. Babushkina was on the attack early and often as she held a 4-0 lead after two first period takedowns. She then had another takedown, and a pair of three-point moves to take the bout 12-0.
In the 59 kg weight class, Ragan, King's first Senior World Team member took on Junior World Champion Jargalma Tsyrenova of Russia, who Ragan previously defeated at the AT&T Senior Worlds. Tsyrenova held a 1-0 lead after the first period after she got a point due to passivity. Ragan evened the score with a point due to passivity in the second period, but Tsyrenova immediately force Ragan out of the ring to take a 2-1 lead. Tsyrenova then took Ragan down for two points, and eventually took the match 6-1.
However, Team USA defeated Team Russia 7-4 in the dual.
The duo, along with the rest of the Tornado will be in action again on January 4 at the Waldorf Open in Forest City, Iowa.
