MEXICO CITY, Mexico – King University women's wrestling had an influence at the Senior Pan American Championships in Mexico City on Wednesday. Both Haley Augello and Julia Salata competed while Tornado head coach Jason Moorman was one of the coaches that helped lead Team USA to a second place finish in the 30 team tournament. Both Augello and Salata earned bronze medals at the competition.
Salata earned a bye into the quarterfinals of the 69 kilogram weight class where she defeated Gilda Oliveira of Brazil 4-0. The junior then dropped a tight 6-5 decision to Colombia's Marcela Izquierdo, landing her a spot in the bronze medal bout. Salata defeated Mexico's Alejandra Pina 14-3 to take the bronze medal.
At 53 kilograms, Augello started her day with a 10-0 tech fall win over Panama's Katherin Sanchez before she dropped her first match of the day in the quarterfinals. The freshman then pinned Camila Fama of Brazil to advance to the bronze medal bout. Facing Mexico's Coral Jimenez, Augello earned the advantage early in the bout, and turned it into a 10- victory for the bronze medal.
