Hildebrandt takes runner-up in World Team Trials Phase II
FARGO, N.D. – On Saturday, Phase II of the World Team Trials were held in Fargo, for the non-Olympic weight classes. The event had a very heavy King University flavor as the Tornado had six women's wrestlers in the competition, five alone at 55 kilograms. Sarah Hildebrandt turned in the best performance, winning the challenge tournament, before falling in the championship bout to take second at 55 kilograms.
Hildebrandt opened with a narrow 4-1 decision over teammate Samantha Klingel after earning a bye in the first round. The junior then defeated Michaela Hutchison 11-3 in the semifinals of the challenge tournament. In the finals of the challenge tournament, Hildebrandt faced Jessica Medina, a former World Team member. Hildebrandt took a tough fought 4-1 decision over Medina to earn a spot in the championship bout against Helen Maroulis, who is ranked third in the world. However, Maroulis was able to make her fifth World Team by defeating Hildebrandt in the best two-of-three match final. Maroulis took the first bout on a pin before topping Hildebrandt 11-0 on a tech fall in the second bout.
After falling to Hildebrandt, Klingel fell to teammate Haley Augello 7-4 in the losers bracket. Augello then took an 8-6 win over Tamara Tillman, advancing to the semifinals of the losers bracket. However, she fell to Jacarra Winchester, who finished third in the challenge tournament, on a 9-0 decision.
Hanna Grisewood and Megan Black also competed for the Tornado with Grisewood dropping her first bout to Klingel on a 4-2 decision. Grisewood then advanced to the quarterfinals of the challenge tournament by pinning Tarkyia Mensah in 3:54. However, she faced Black in the quarterfinals after she took a 12-0 tech fall win over Rachel Archer. Black topped Grisewood on an 8-0 decision before falling in the tournament challenge semifinals to Huchison.
Katie Germain also competed at 60 kilograms for the Tornado, dropping both matches.
