King splits opening day of NWCA National Duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The sixth-ranked King University women's wrestling team opened the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals with a 39-8 victory over 22nd-ranked University of Jamestown. However, the Tornado fell to sixth-ranked Emmanuel College in the quarterfinals 29-15, ending their run for their fifth straight championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED – #22 JAMESTOWN

  • The Tornado got off to a good start with a win by forfeit at 101 pounds and Aleeah Gould followed with a 1:30 pin of Angel Ogden at 109 pounds.
  • Following another win by forfeit, Briana Kellin gave King a 20-0 lead by pinning Chelsea Dionisio in 5:33 at 123 pounds.
  • Allison Petix earned a 10-0 technical fall victory over Caitlyn Kaz at 130 pounds and Nicole Joseph pinned Cara Romeike in 3:46 at 146 pounds to give the Tornado a 29-0 advantage.
  • At 155 pounds, Jessi Kee pinned Mykaela Ellis in 13 seconds before Victoria Espinoza gave King the 39-8 victory with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Diana Lopez.

HOW IT HAPPENED – #6 EMMANUEL

  • The Tornado got off to a slow start against Emmanuel as the Lions opened with five straight victories, one of which was by forfeit.
  • Emmanuel started with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory at 101 pounds to get the dual started.
  • Petix earned the first win for the Tornado with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Astrid Silva at 136 pounds.
  • However, the Lions won the next two matches to take a 28-7 lead before King won the final two matches.
  • Kee earned a 12-2 technical fall win over Felicity Bryant at 170 pounds and Espinoza took a 10-0 technical fall victory over Briana Jordan at 191 pounds.
  • It wasn't enough, however, as the Lions took the dual 29-15.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The loss for the Tornado is their first at the NWCA National Duals since they fell to Simon Fraser University in the 2013 semifinals.
  • It end a 13-match winning streak and a streak four straight national titles for the Tornado.
  • This is the seventh NWCA National Duals the Tornado have competed in, and the setback to Emmanuel marks only their third loss at the event.
