Three straight wins gives King 5th at NWCA National Duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The King University women's wrestling team came back from splitting a pair of match on Thursday at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals with three straight wins on Friday to take fifth place. The Tornado topped No. 15 Missouri Baptist 37-8 before defeating No. 9 Oklahoma City University 30-14 to reach the fifth place match. King then defeated 11th-ranked Life University 31-15 to take fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED – #15 Missouri Baptist

  • King got off to a hot start, taking a 20-0 lead behind forfeits at the first four weight classes.
  • Allison Petix then came up with a 1:39 pin of Yulissa Medrano at 130 pounds.
  • Following another forfeit, the Spartans got on the board with a win at 143 pounds.
  • Jessi Kee gave King a 34-3 lead with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Kaylee Foster at 155 pounds.
  • Victoria Espinoza capped the 37-8 victory with a 2-1 win over Darcie Manning-O'Brien at 191 pounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED – #9 OKLAHOMA CITY

  • King started off with a win by forfeit that was followed by back-to-back pins from Regina Doi and Aleeah Gould. Doi pinned Raven Guidry in 2:46 at 109 pounds and Gould took a 2:54 pin over Lei Nacapuy at 116 pounds.
  • Briana Kellin and Petix both took wins over ranked opponents, Kellin took a 9-2 decision, scoring the final seven points, to defeat No. 8 Monica Mendoza. Petix topped seventh-ranked Daniela Flores on a 10-0 technical fall to give King a 22-1 advantage.
  • Following a Tornado forfeit, Joseph earned a 10-0 technical fall win over Sydney Freund to get King back on the board.
  • Following a pair of Tornado defeats, Espinoza capped the 30-14 King victory with a 7-3 triumph over Mckyla Kerr at 191 pounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED – #11 LIFE

  • The Tornado got off to a great start again, taking wins at the first three weight classes. Regina Doi took an 11-0 technical fall over Brigette Ariosa at 101 pounds and Marina Doi followed with a 10-0 technical fall over Alanda Nguyen at 109 pounds.
  • Gould gave the Tornado a 13-0 lead with a 2:03 pin of Tyesha Topps at 116 pounds.
  • Following a Life victory, Petix and Joseph recorded back-to-back pins at 130 and 136 pounds, respectively.
  • Petix pinned Aysia Cortez in 2:03 and Joseph put the Tornado ahead 23-5 with a pin of Sophie Gorman in 31 seconds.
  • Kee earned a 14-2 technical fall over Zoe Wight at 170 pounds and Espinoza capped the 31-15 victory with a win on criteria at 191 pounds. She scored the last point to defeat Stephanie Pantoja 1-1.
