King Baseball Honored with Messick Sportsmanship Award

King Baseball Honored with Messick Sportsmanship Award

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Conference Carolinas honored eight of its current member schools for its sportsmanship this spring season with the release of the individual and overall Messick Sportsmanship Award winners. King College was one of the eight institutions honored when Tornado Baseball was named an honoree for the spring season. This is the first such award for a King program since joining the conference last May.

The sportsmanship awards are presented annually to the member institution judged to have exhibited the highest degree of sportsmanship among its players, coaches, and fans during their regular playing season. This year marks the second consecutive year that there are also individual sport Sportsmanship Awards highlighting Conference Carolinas efforts to honor institutions exhibiting sportsmanlike behaviors.

The Sportsmanship Award for specific sports are decided using a voting process implemented by Athletics Directors that calls for a coach and student-athlete representative to vote together and judge conference competitor’s sportsmanship. After all the votes have been submitted the conference office averages the results and the institution with the highest overall average is awarded each individual Sportsmanship Award for a conference sport.

The institution that has the highest average among conference members across all sports is awarded the highest conference sportsmanship award with the Messick Award as the overall sportsmanship winner for the entire athletic year.

Belmont Abbey received the overall Messick Sportsmanship champion trophy Tuesday at the conclusion of the conference’s annual spring meetings.  The two-day spring meetings were graciously hosted by Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. Individual teams from Belmont Abbey, Coker, Converse, King, Lees-McRae, Limestone, North Greenville and Pfeiffer were also recognized as demonstrating the best sportsmanship behavior for specific spring sports.
