BRISTOL, Tenn. – Prior to the start of the 2018-19 academic year, the King University athletic department held their annual retreat. Following a morning of discussions aimed to focus and prepare for the upcoming year, the Tornado athletic staff spent the afternoon serving at Holston View Elementary School, helping the HVES staff prepare for the start of the school year.
"The passion of our athletic staff for serving the community is very humbling," said Director of Athletics David Hicks. "It was an honor to work alongside our staff in support of the hard-working teachers and staff at Holston View Elementary."
Some staff spent the day inside painting and cleaning, while others were outside mulching and pulling weeds from flower beds.
"Volunteering together as a staff is a great bonding experience as well as an opportunity to live out our mission statement," Head Women's Soccer Coach Leah Presley said. "We teach our athletes to lead, serve, and achieve, and that is exactly what we model for ourselves as a coaching staff. We had a great time together and I'm looking forward to many more projects just like this."
The athletic staff power washed and cleaned all of the sidewalks, and removed steps going down to a playground and replaced them with bricks, making it easier for people to utilize this area. Students at Holston View will begin classes on Monday, August 6.
"I had a fun time working with my fellow coaches to help out at Holston View Elementary School," Head Women's Basketball Coach Josh Thompson said. "It was extra special for me because it's the school all three of my sons have attended or are attending. I'm so glad we could help out and give back."
